From the cattle stock exchange to the Concorde, At Work in Arizona blends past and present to showcase the cultural and economic heritage of the state. The idea came about when Jim Lundy commissioned Szabo in 2003 to fill the bank’s walls with art depicting the history of commerce in Arizona. Rosebrook, a historian and former associate editor of Arizona Highway, was commissioned to write the book and tell the back story of each photograph represented.
This art has now been assembled into a stunning pictorial essay. Featuring an introduction by former Governor Bruce Babbitt and endorsements from former Senator John Kyl, Congressman Ed Pastor, and James Ballinger, The Sybil Harrington Director, Phoenix Art Museum, the 168-page book highlights more than 212 historic photographs from Arizona’s statehood until today.
This unique collection includes rare aerial photos of the building of Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge to Alliance Bank commissioned photos of Pedro Guerrero, Frank Lloyd Wright’s photographer for twenty years; Lute Olson, UA’s famous basketball coach; and young Ben Butler of Hayden Flour Mill to historic photos of the Phelps Dodge Copper Turbines alongside Marilyn Monroe at the Arizona State Fair.
